Discover Bala, Ontario in the Winter

Why Spend Winter in Bala?

My girlfriends and I decided to enter a curling touranment this year as we were looking for a winter weekend getaway. Who knew that Bala, Ontario turns into a winter wonderland with a small-town charm.

Located in Muskoka, Bala tends to see more visitors in the summer months but who knew this sleepy town offers a mix of snow-dusted scenery, curling tournaments, and an outdoor spa experience. Between curling matches, take a stroll through town to discover local shops, cafes, and frozen landscapes that are picture-perfect for winter adventurers.

Attending the First Annual Bala Bonspiel

We had the chance to participate in the first-ever Bala Bonspiel, a curling tournament that brought locals and visitors together for a weekend of friendly competition, great food, and winter fun. hosted by The Bala Bay Inn.
If you’re new to curling, don’t worry—the community, the vibe and welcoming spirit make it the perfect place to learn. Between matches, we explored the town, warmed up with local eats, and enjoyed the perfect mix of relaxation and activity.

Where to Stay: Bala Bay Inn

For the weekend, we stayed at Bala Bay Inn, a cozy and historic inn that served as the perfect home base. Originally built in the early 1900s, the hotel opened its doors to the first guests in the summer of 1910. Today, it offers charming, minimalistic, and comfortable accommodations, and its convenient location makes exploring Bala effortless.

Yes, the rumors are true. This lounge, which is now The Ghost Kitchen, is aptly named. It was here that E.B. Sutton (the original owner, back in the 1900s) was laid in state for several days after his 1916 death, directly opposite the still-standing fireplace. Ever since, stories say it has been visited by a spectral phenomenon.

Winter Activities in Bala

Beyond the curling rink, there’s plenty to do in Bala during the winter months. Here are some suggested things to do to embrace the season:

Ice Skating

For a classic winter fun option, lace up your skates at Clear Lake Brewing Co. This brewery offers an outdoor skating rink, so you can glide around before heading inside for a well-earned flight and bite to eat.

Snowshoeing & Winter Hiking

If you love winter hikes, head to Hardy Lake Provincial Park. There are a handful of trail options within the park and several lookouts along the way. In the winter, the lake and rocky outcrops transform into a snow-covered wonderland. I recommend bringing snowshoes or ice cleats to make your adventure easier and more enjoyable!

Outdoor Spa Experience

Just a short drive away, the Muskoka Beer Spa is the perfect place to warm up after a day outside. The saunas and change rooms are open throughout the winter, allowing you to relax in the heat while surrounded by snow-covered trees. There's nothing better than running from the hot sauna back to the change room while watching snowflakes fall around you!

Where to Eat in Bala

Bala may be small, but it has some great dining options to keep you fueled and full for your winter adventures.

  • The Ghost Kitchen (Located within the Bala Bay Inn) – A great option for a cozy meal without leaving the inn. We absolutely loved this restaurant! The Bala Bonspiel Curling weekend included breakfast and dinner. I personally had the prime rib, which was absolutely delicious!

  • Clearwater Brewing—Enjoy a flight of craft beer to try a few options they provide and enjoy some casual pub food while taking in the warm, welcoming atmosphere. Remember, before or after, you can lace up your skates and head out to their outdoor rink.

  • Oliver’s Coffee – A must-stop for a morning coffee and a pastry before heading out for the day.

  • Bala Falls Pub – Though I didn’t personally visit, this option was open over the winter and is a staple for classic pub fare.

  • Hook & Ladder – Another spot that was open in the winter, offering a local and welcoming dining experience.

Be Prepared for Outdoor Adventures

If you plan to explore beyond town—whether it's hiking at Hardy Lake, snowshoeing on frozen trails, or just taking in the snowy scenery—having the right gear makes all the difference.

Winter Adventure Packing List

  • Thermos with a Hot Drink – Because nothing beats sipping something warm in the cold.

  • Spa Essentials: Bathrobe, towel, sandals/flip-flops and swimsuit.

Know Before You Go:

  • Winter Road Conditions: Muskoka roads can be snowy and icy, so check the forecast and drive accordingly. Winter tires and a stocked car emergency kit are also good ideas.
