Weekend in Timmins, ON
Why This Northern Ontario Town Surprised Me
When most people plan a northern road trip, the first destinations that come to mind are usually Killarney, Lake Superior, or other “bucket list” spots. But Timmins? Honestly, it wasn’t on my radar either. And yet, ended up surprising me in the very best way.
Between waterfalls, scenic hiking trails, cozy cafes, and some of the best food I’ve had in ages, this Northern Ontario town offers a little bit of everything. Whether you’re looking for a relaxing escape or an adventure-packed itinerary, Timmins is worth adding to your list.
Start With History & Views
Begin your weekend at the Timmins Museum National Exhibition Centre. With free entry and friendly staff, this museum shares the history of how Timmins became a global mining player. You’ll also get a deeper look at the people who shaped the area through exhibits on genealogy and local stories. Don’t skip the Hollinger House, a reconstructed 1930s miner’s home, and the prospector’s cabin for a glimpse into daily life back then.
Next, take a quick drive up Shania Twain Drive to the Hollinger Open Pit. It might feel unusual to visit an active gold mine, but this spot gives you a full 360-degree view of the city of Timmins—totally worth the short detour.
Coffee Breaks & Local Eats
If you’re anything like me, coffee is a non-negotiable on a road trip. In Timmins, you’ll want to stop at Ciao Sandwich Co. for a mid-day pick-me-up. Not only do they have a full espresso bar, but they also make the best focaccia sandwiches (seriously, don’t skip this one).
Other foodie stops to add to your list:
Full Beard Brewing Co. – laid-back craft brewery with a great selection of beers on tap
Your Choice Culinary – a food truck serving up local favourites and comfort food
Markets & Local Shopping
If your weekend falls on a Saturday, head to the Mountjoy Farmers’ Market (9 am to 12 pm). It’s located in the Mountjoy Historical Conservation Area and is a great way to support local vendors while picking up fresh produce, baked goods, and snacks.
For groceries, stop by Pick of the Crop, a locally owned shop offering a wide selection of fresh fruits and vegetables, as well as premade meals. It was the perfect option for easy camping dinners. Another must-stop (local favourite) is The Hollinger House Bakery & Deli. Think fresh bread, high-quality deli meats, and custom-made sandwiches, along with a wide range of dessert choices.
Where to Stay
For my camping friends, you can choose between Kettle Lakes Provincial Park, which is just 45 minutes outside Timmins heading East. The park is filled with stunning boreal forest and, of course, kettle lakes. With swimming, paddling, and plenty of trails, it’s the kind of place that makes you feel like you’ve escaped into nature without being too far from town.
Alternatively, you can choose Ivanhoe Lake Provincial Park, which is just over an hour West. With its wide open lake, sandy beaches, and classic Northern Ontario charm, it’s the perfect stop for campers, paddlers, and road trippers looking to slow down and soak up the outdoors. Add Ivanhoe Lake Provincial Park to your road trip!
Not into camping? No problem. Timmins offers a variety of hotel options within the city, providing a comfortable and easy weekend base.
If you want something truly unique, check out Cedar Meadows Resort & Spa. Located just minutes from downtown, this resort combines rustic Northern Ontario charm with a touch of luxury. You can book “Sleeping with the Wolves”. Book yourself a cute cabin that offers the perfect blend of comfort and excitement, ensuring a peaceful night’s rest while surrounded by the mesmerizing sounds of the forest.
Make it stand out
Whatever it is, the way you tell your story online can make all the difference.
Where to Eat in Timmins
Timmins’ food scene has been growing, and you’ll find essentially everything. Cozy cafés, food trucks, and sit-down restaurants worth checking out. Here are some of my favourites from spending a weekend in Timmins:
Ciao Sandwich Co.: I am still craving these sandwiches! Serving up delicious coffee with a full espresso bar and homemade focaccia buns, layered with fresh ingredients, and big flavours.
Sukhdev Restaurant Timmins: Serving up some of the best Indian food in Northern Ontario. Hearty and authentic food that focuses on healthy choices, fresh flavours and locally sourced and grown food.
What to Do in Timmins
Timmins is surrounded by boreal forest, rivers, lakes, and trails. Depending on the season, you’ll find no shortage of outdoor activities.
Hersey Lake Conservation Area – Many hiking and biking trails just minutes from downtown. A local favourite for getting outside without leaving the city.
Gillies Lake Conservation Area – A scenic 2.5 km walking loop around the lake, with picnic spots and views of Gillies Lake.
High Falls – Just a short drive from the city, this waterfall is worth the trip for the views and the sound of rushing water.
Why Visit Timmins?
Timmins is a destination that surprised me. One minute you’re sipping coffee at a cute café, the next you’re spotting elk at a wildlife park, and before the day’s over, you’re sitting by a lake watching the sunset.
Timmins offers a unique mix of nature, community, and comfort in Northern Ontario. Whether you’re planning a quick weekend getaway or just passing through on a longer Northern Ontario road trip, Timmins truly deserves a place on your list.
