Top 10 Things to Do in North Bay This Winter
North Bay in the winter is really full of surprises. As someone who grew up in Sudbury, North Bay is a neighbour to us, yet I never took the time to visit and explore during the winter season. Winter in North Bay isn’t just about bundling up and waiting for spring. It’s about getting outside, trying something new, and embracing the season to make it feel more fun. If you’re heading here this winter (or live nearby and want fresh ideas), here are 10 things worth making time for in North Bay this winter.
I spent a weekend wandering downtown, checking out the waterfront, hiking a few trails, visiting a waterfall, and finding all the local gems that make this city feel so welcoming. I loved my stay at The Homewood Suites by Hilton Downtown North Bay. It was super convenient to walk around the downtown core, and accessible to many hikes, trails and outdoor adventures.
1. Stroll Downtown + the Waterfront
Start your trip with a beautiful stroll through downtown North Bay. From your accommodation, everything is super walkable. Take advantage of a sunny winter day. I highly recommend walking the waterfront along Kate Pace Way and checking out Kings Landing Pier. Lake Nipissing is gorgeous, and it’s picture-perfect with snow-dusted views.
2. Explore Oak St W & Main St W
There’s a section of the prettiest buildings, with brightly coloured shop fronts. Check out and shop secondhand at Clothes Encounters of the 2nd Kind and Talbots Throwbacks for some fun thrift browsing and shopping. You’ll be sure to find a few pieces to take back with you.
3. Cafés & Quirky Shops
I didn’t realize how incredible the shopping in downtown North Bay was. You can easily spend a full day bopping in and out of all the stores. So many local businesses (and many thrift + antique stores) to support. Here are some of my favourite stops:
The FARM – Cozy spot with fun local merch, cute home + decor items and such a warm and inviting vibe.
Deegan’s Antiques – If you love searching for antiques. Hunt for unique finds and treasures from the past.
The Annex – Eclectic shop full of the cutest clothing, accessories and gifts.
Allison the Bookman – I LOVE a good used book shop, and this one is a booklover’s dream with cozy corners and so many books to browse (you’ll most likely be going home with a handful).
4. Sip + Savour at Coffee Shops
Opera Bakery House – Head here for a morning coffee, or stop in for lunch. They always have some kind of soup + sandwich combo!
Twiggs Coffee– Your classic friendly neighbourhood café, perfect for a coffee break. North Bay chain, with a few locations.
GD2GO – Conveniently located close to your hotel. Grab a quick caffeine fix or warm up with a bowl of soup after the outdoors.
5. Restaurants You Need To Eat At
Breakfast Spots
Hoagies Diner – Local favourite spot that serves up classic breakfast comforts in a retro diner setting.
Terry’s Place – Homey diner vibes with hearty portions to fuel your day.
Syl’s Neighbourhood Kitchen – Casual, welcoming, and always delicious.
Lunch + Dinner
Lou Dawg’s BBQ – Fun atmosphere and the best southern-style BBQ in town.
Northern Himalayan Café – Bold, flavourful dishes that transport your taste buds.
Urban Café – Fresh, local ingredients in a relaxed spot downtown.
Bloc Public House – Farm-to-table bites, craft cocktails, and live music.
6. Evening Fun + Late Night Bites
Gateway City Brewery for a flight, light bites, pinball, and more live tunes.
Crossroads (Friday/Saturday only) for happy hour dinner, crafted cocktails, and sharing plates in a relaxed, intimate atmosphere.
Highball Billiards Bar & Grill - Pool tables + great drinks + light bites to enjoy an evening.
Partners Billiards and Bowling - Get out for a night of fun!
7. North Bay Museum
Located inside the historic Canadian Pacific Railway station, the North Bay Museum is a worthwhile stop if you want to learn more about the city’s past and present. The exhibits are thoughtfully curated and very well done, making it a great indoor break on a winter day. Admission is only $4.00.
8. Hiking + Outdoor Adventures
Laurier Woods Conservation Area: A 240-acre natural oasis in the city. There are multiple trails to explore — go for a few and soak in the winter landscapes. Perfect for snowshoeing or crisp winter walks.
Duchesnay Falls: Another stunning hike for winter adventurers. Pack your camera — it’s gorgeous with icy waterfalls.
Fat Biking at Stepping Stones: A fun way to get your winter cardio in.
Kick Sledding on Kate Pace Way: Meet Lori from Sisu Adventure Rentals for a lesson and sled your way along the scenic trails.
9. Farmers’ Market & Local Flavours
If you're free on a Saturday, don't miss the vibrant local farmers’ market. It’s a wonderful opportunity to pick up fresh seasonal goodies, delicious local treats, and perhaps even some unique souvenirs to bring home as mementos of your visit.
10. Do a Free Self-Guided Art or Film Tour
Bundle up and explore downtown with one of North Bay’s free self-guided tours. Download the Driftescape App and choose the Mural Art Tour, packed with colourful, creative stops, or the Holiday Film Tour, which takes you to real filming locations from cozy winter movies. Both are easy, walkable, and full of Instagram-worthy spots.
