The best time to visit Samara depends on your travel preferences. I visited at the end of November/beginning of December, and honestly, it was absolutely perfect. There were fewer crowds and a lot of sunshine.

  • Dry Season (December to April): Known as Costa Rica’s summer, this is the most popular time to visit. Expect sunny skies, warm temperatures, and minimal rainfall, making it ideal for beach days, kayaking, and other outdoor activities. However, it's also the busiest season, so booking accommodations and tours in advance is highly recommended.

  • Green (Rainy) Season (May to November): While afternoons often bring rain, mornings are typically sunny and pleasant. This season offers lush, green landscapes and fewer crowds, providing a more tranquil experience. The positive side is that there will be a lot fewer crowds! The rainy season is perfect for a quieter, budget-friendly trip with verdant scenery.

Budget: Samara Pacific Lodge - Relax by the pool or unwind on your private patio and indulge in a delicious breakfast.

I absolutely loved my stay at Samara Pacific Lodge! The owners were extremely welcoming and friendly. The rooms were spotless and the perfect size. The lodge is conveniently located about a five-minute walk from the beach and the downtown area. Additionally, the pool was a fantastic feature for when I wanted to relax and unwind. I highly recommend staying here, plus breakfast is included and they honestly bar!

Where to Eat in Samara

Samara’s dining scene has a mix of casual beachside eats and upscale options, with plenty of fresh seafood and local flavours. These were my favourites:

  • Bohemia Cafe – Best spot for brunch, lunch, smoothie bowls, fresh juices, and coffee!

  • El Lagarto – Grilled seafood and meats cooked over an open flame. It was a really fun experience.

  • Gusto Beach – A beachfront spot to grab pizza and beer for lunch (at a budget price) and turns into an Instagram-worthy Mediterranean-inspired dinner spot.

I also highly recommend eating at a "Soda,” which is a small, family-run restaurant serving traditional Costa Rican cuisine at an affordable price. These eateries are beloved by locals and travellers alike for their homey atmosphere and authentic flavours.

Tips for Eating at a Soda:

  • Look for sodas frequented by locals—that’s a good sign of great food.

  • Don’t hesitate to ask for recommendations; the staff are usually friendly and happy to suggest popular dishes.

  • Try a natural fresco (fresh fruit juice) with your meal for an extra treat.

If you're in Samara, look for sodas like Soda La Perla, which is known for its delicious food and welcoming atmosphere!

How Long Should You Stay in Samara?

The ideal length of stay in Samara depends on what you're looking for in your trip. If you're seeking a quiet week-long beach destination, Samara is the perfect spot to unwind and explore at a relaxed pace, with plenty of options for outdoor adventures.
