Here’s What Guides Don’t Tell You About São Miguel, Azores

Don’t let the glossy brochures fool you; there’s so much more to discover in São Miguel.

If you're planning a trip to São Miguel, the largest island in the stunning Azores archipelago, you're in for a delightful experience. While many guides will lead you to popular spots like Sete Cidades and Lagoa do Fogo, there’s so much more to this beautiful island than its well-trodden paths. In this post, I’ll share nine off-the-beaten-path experiences that reveal a different side of São Miguel, allowing you to connect more deeply with the island’s unique charm and culture.

Let’s start with Ponta da Ferraria, a breathtaking spot where you can swim in a natural hot spring right next to the ocean. The combination of warm water and crashing waves creates a serene atmosphere that’s perfect for relaxation. If you visit around sunset, you’ll be treated to an unforgettable view as the sun dips below the horizon.

Next, make your way to Quinta Da Jardinete, the island's only winery. This charming vineyard offers a unique opportunity to sample local wines amidst beautiful scenery. Enjoy a tasting and learn about the winemaking process while soaking in the peaceful surroundings. It’s a wonderful place to unwind and appreciate the local flavors.

This hidden thermal spring is located in a lush forest setting, providing a serene escape. The warm waters and beautiful surroundings make it a perfect spot for relaxation, away from the more popular hot springs.

For the thrill-seekers friends out there, you absolutely need to go on a canyoning tour in Parque Natural da Ribeira dos Caldeirões. This exhilarating experience takes you through lush landscapes, where you can navigate waterfalls and plunge into natural pools. It’s a fantastic way to appreciate the island’s wild beauty while getting your adrenaline pumping!

While exploring São Miguel, try limpets, a local delicacy that many visitors overlook. Often grilled with garlic butter, these tender mollusks are a true taste of the Azores. Sampling them at a local restaurant will give you an insight into the island’s culinary traditions. I won’t lie, I did not looove them, but I also did not want the FOMO.

Another must-try is the bifana, a classic Portuguese sandwich filled with marinated pork (or beef). This savoury delight is a favourite among locals and is best enjoyed at a casual eatery. Pair it with a Super Bock (local beer), and you’ll have a meal that captures the heart of Azorean comfort food.

As you drive around the island, don’t be surprised if you encounter some roadblocks—courtesy of the island's impressive population of around 125,000 dairy cows! These cute new friends are a reminder of São Miguel’s agricultural roots and add to the island's character. It’s a perfect excuse to slow down and enjoy the scenery!

After a long hike, you’ll visit to the abandoned Sanguinho Village is a must. Currently being restored, this quaint spot offers a glimpse into the island’s past and showcases its unique architecture. Walking through the village feels like stepping back in time, surrounded by nature’s beauty. If you see Bar Loja, and it’s open STOP BY! We were so sad to miss out on this experience!

São Miguel has become one of my favourite destinations, and it’s full of hidden treasures just waiting to be explored. By taking a chance and venturing beyond the popular tourist spots, you'll not only experience the island's stunning natural beauty but also connect with its rich culture and warm hospitality.

Whether you're soaking in a natural hot spring, savouring a local delicacy, or exploring the stories of abandoned villages, these unique experiences will create lasting memories. So, as you plan your journey, don’t forget to seek out these lesser-known gems—they may just become the highlights of your adventure on this enchanting island!
